Recommendation: 'The Jewel' by Amy Ewing

The Jewel is the glittering inner city of the island, a place where the elite live in luxury and decadence miles away from those who work and live in the outer rings of the cities beyond their walls.  The most distant part of the island is the poorest and it is in the poorest parts of the island that the greatest treasure can be found; a girl capable of carrying a Royal child to term.  Raised and tutored to be perfect, these girls are coveted prizes sold at auction to the highest bidder so they can be used to carry a Royal baby to term before being retired to a comfortable life.

It is not the dream of every girl to be one of the chosen few, but when you are poor you have little choice - especially when the law requires every girl who passes the test to enter training.  Violet is one of the lucky ones, she has passed through her training and been sold at auction for a truly staggering amount. But she is about the learn that she truly knows nothing about her new world, and that danger is lurking around every corner for a girl who doesn't know the rules or understand her place in the world.  Violet and every girl like her are nothing but pawns in a power struggle, a means to an end for the Royals who see them as property and nothing more.  Violet must learn to follow the rules before the cost is too great.

Enter the Jewel, a startling and thought provoking dystopian world where magic and intrigue collide in a confusing and twisted reality.  This is more than your average dystopian glance at the future, this is the first step into a world where nothing is what it seems and learning who to trust can have fatal consequences.
