Recommendation: 'Perfected' by Kate Jarvik Birch

She is the perfect example of a pet, beautiful and graceful, bred in one of the best kennels in the country, trained to be talented and docile.  Ella is not a golden retriever or a poodle, she is a perfectly miniature human, the must have accessory for the wealthy and powerful.  Brought into the home of Congressman Gibbs, she is destined to have the perfect life of comfort she was raised to expect, a treasured jewel to be displayed and enjoyed.  But there is something not quite right with her world, there are undercurrents to conversations she doesn't understand, and stirring feelings she doesn't recognise.

Ella was bred and trained to be perfect, but nothing is truly perfect, and the more Ella understands her world and her place in it, the more she pushes to understand.  She may look like the people around her, albeit in perfect miniature, but Ella is about to learn that she is nothing but property, a toy to be used at whim.  As her feelings for Penn change and grow, Ella learns the hard way that she is not human - and has no rights to be.

Perfected will blow your mind and will stay with you long after you have turned the last page.  In the future the rich and powerful have taken the ultimate step and bred people to be the perfect pet, but nothing is truly perfect and it soon becomes clear that the life of a pampered pet is not what Ella expected.  There are twists and turns in this addictive and powerful read and I highly recommend it - with the caveat that it is best suited to older teens, or younger teens with someone to talk to about the issues raised.  Hopefully we will see more from this amazing new author.
