Recommendation: 'Alex as well' by Alyssa Brugman

Alex As Well by Alyssa Brugman

Puberty is a time of changes, a time to discover who you are. But the changes and challenges Alex faces are more than the average teen faces. The identity she chooses causes massive and far-reaching ripples in her family and deep impossible choices for Alex. She throws out her wardrobe, changes her school and creates a new life for herself, becomes a normal girl. The only problem is that Alex was raised as a boy.   This is an emotionally moving and insightful book looking at the challenges that face all teenagers as they strive to find themselves, and their own independence. It is compassionately told, downplaying rather than sensationalising Alex’s uniqueness. It highlights issues familiar to many teens, such as bullying, parental expectations, making friends and having a crush.   I recommend this book, not just to teens who are facing challenges, but also to their parents. It is interesting as a parent to see the other side of the story.   ~ SaraJane (Te Matariki Clendon Library).
