Recommendation: 'The girl of fire and thorns' by Rae Carson

The girl of fire and thorns by Rae Carson
Each year YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) selects the top ten YA fiction books of the year. The Girl of Fire and Thorns is in their top ten for 2012, so I read this story with pretty high expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. It feels a little like Tamora Pierce's Beka Cooper series although the main character, Elisa is a far cry from Beka Cooper. Overweight and a bookworm she feels like a failure of a princess particularly in comparison to her gorgeous, successful older sister. Every one hundred years a Godstone appears in the navel of a baby, Elisa is this century's bearer of the Godstone. The bearer is chosen by God to complete an act of service. Married to a king she has never met, and whisked away to his kingdom, Elisa finds herself at the centre of kidnapping attempts, embroiled in political intrigue and at times fighting for her life. A great story, about a very appealing heroine.
