Recommendation: 'Being friends with boys' by Terra Elan McVoy

Being Friends with boys by Terra Elan Mcvoy
I haven’t read an awesome teen book in ages (really only a couple of weeks, but it feels like forever) but Being Friends With Boys put an end to that bad run. I’m a sucker for high-school-relationship-drama tales and Being Friends with Boys fits the bill nicely.

The book focuses on Charlotte, a girl with lots of guy mates. She hasn’t had much luck with girl friends – her ex-best friend ditched her for cooler companions at the start of high school, her sister has ditched her for college and she isn’t exactly bffs with her step-sisters. Hanging out with the guys is drama-free, until it gets complicated. I liked it as it’s not only about dating dramas but also about Charlotte’s relationships with her family and friends. I also like Charlotte. She’s not obsessed with her weight, she actually likes to eat and she’s not afraid to admit when she mucks up. Although she starts off as pretty insecure, in the end she’s wearing a kick-ass ball gown and performing lead vocals with her band at the winter formal. If you’re a fan of Sarah Dessen, this is one for you.
