Retro read: 'Briar Rose' by Jane Yolen

Briar Rose by Jane Yolen

Regular readers of this blog probably won’t be surprised if I admit a taste for books based on fairy tales, and on fantasy in general.

That’s what initially appealed to me – all those years ago – with Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. Briar Rose is, if you didn’t know, Sleeping Beauty’s name (in some versions of the tale, anyway), and Jane Yolen is an amazing fantasy author.

So, that’s how I approached this book – many years ago. What I got was so much more.

Becca has always loved listening to her grandmother, Gemma’s stories. Gemma always told the story of Sleeping Beauty. As an adult, the story still lingers, even though Gemma is in a nursing home, close to death. Becca is determined to find out the story of Sleeping Beauty – and why Gemma would insist that she was Briar Rose.

The journey lets her to Gemma’s homeland, Poland. And into the past. Into the horrors of the holocaust.
This is an amazing story, of heartbreak and hope. And one not forgotten soon.
