Introducing Alanna

OMG. What to say about Alanna? Alanna’s adventures – as told by Tamora Pierce in the Song of the Lioness Quartet – were ground-breaking when first published.

Alanna was one of the first fully-realised girl-with-sword characters in young adult fantasy.

Alanna and her twin brother, Thom, are basically ignored by their father. As the time approaches for them to leave home to study, Alanna realises she must take action or be forced into a life she doesn’t want. So… Alanna becomes Alan, and sets off to become a knight.

Alanna’s journey is told in:

  • Alanna: the first adventure
  • In the hand of the goddess
  • The woman who rides like a man
  • Lioness rampant
  • Alanna appears in the Immortals quartet (which is all about Daine):

  • Wild magic
  • Wolf-speaker
  • The Emperor Mage
  • The realms of the gods
  • Alanna’s example is followed by Kel, the first girl to legitimately train to become a knight:

  • First test
  • Page
  • Squire
  • Lady knight
  • *SPOILER ALERT* for those who haven’t read ALL Tamora Pierce books: Alanna’s daughter stars in Trickster’s choice and Trickster’s queen. It’s interesting seeing Alanna as a mother with a strong-willed daughter…PS Aly and Nawat reappear in a story in Tortall and other lands.
