Recommendation: 'The Unidentified' by Rae Mariz

The Unidentified by Rae Mariz

The unidentified by Rae Mariz.Imagine a world where sponsors have taken over schools, where what you see, feel, think, and do in The Game influences the brands that people create, buy, and sell – that is Kid’s world. Inside The Game, everyday life makes the students into market research guinea pigs, as brands try and gain the edge over their competition. Kid has her small circle of friends, her music, and the comforting knowledge that she will never be Branded, never be one of the people that everyone watches. Her best friend Ari dreams of the day she will be Branded, but for Kid life just flows along inside The Game.

Then Kid witnesses a shocking stunt that shakes her up in a way she has never experienced before. The Unidentified claim responsibility for the stunt, but who are they, and what do they really stand for? As Kid digs deeper into the mystery of the Unidentified, she suddenly finds herself thrust into the world of being Branded – or making new friends and facing the potential loss of old friends. Digging deeper into the mystery of the Unidentified, Kid soon realises that the world of The Game is not the cosy place that adults think it is, that there is a darker undercurrent under the surface.

Part mystery, part thriller, part creepy please-don’t-let-the-future-turn-out-like-this – The Unidentified is also a slick read that was very hard to put down. Kid is the perfect hero (or antihero, depending on how you look at it), and the plot moves along at a good pace without jumping too far ahead of the story. This is the author’s first teen novel, but hopefully there are many more to come.

A five star read.
