Recommendation: 'A golden web' by Barbara Quick

A golden web by Barbara Quick.

We take so many things for granted these days. If you’re female, intelligent, and with a passion for knowledge – you have a good chance of going to university. If you want to study medicine, if you work hard, you can achieve your dreams.

Step back in time and it was a completely different story.

Meet Alessandra, whose life is planned out, mainly by her stepmother. At the age of 14 she is kept secluded at home, unable to even look out the window. At 15, she is sent to a convent for a year to prepare for her marriage to someone she’s never met, and won’t meet until her wedding day. This is not the future Alessandra hopes for. She disguises herself as boy, changes her name to Sandro, and escapes to Bologna, to study medicine.

Based on a, probably, true person, this is a fascinating, yet tragic, story of determination, individuality, and courage.
