What’s all the fuss about?

What’s all the fuss about?

The Hobbit or there and back again by J.R.R. Tolkien.

“... I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it's very difficult to find anyone.” – Gandalf. “I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!" – Bilbo.

There is a bit of drama surrounding the movie making of this book now as the NZ actors are striking and Tolkien obsessed Peter Jackson is threatening to move the filming to Eastern Europe! But filming aside, this is one of the most popular fantasy books ever written and if you haven’t read it yet – do so before the film comes out!

Very basically – Bilbo, a hobbit who you will have met in the Lord of the Rings (you must have seen the movies!!) , is sent with a group of 13 dwarves to recover the vast treasure that was stolen by the evil dragon Smaug. In the story, Bilbo saves the dwarves from many dangers, succeeding each time only because of mere luck really. There is a huge epic battle and Bilbo finds The One Ring (my precious!)

I found this book much easier to read than the LTR trilogy and much more entertaining, unlike the LTR Tolkien doesn’t painstakingly recount every blade of grass growing on the ‘hospitable mountains’ which is a relief, because if you are like me, the LTR can get a bit tiring to read, as if you were walking into Mordor itself.

The Hobbit however, has everything you want in an epic fantasy novel – dragons, trolls, goblins, elves, evil wolves, magic rings, a freaky man-bear creature and wizards!

For me – someone who is not that hot on Tolkien, The Hobbit was always the book I liked – so give it a go – and see what all the fuss is about!
