Comic book month recommendations

Comic book month! A couple of reviews by Mini...

Check these great new titles out!

Hi everyone, well these two comics were sitting in my library (Panmure) so I went and had lunch and had a nice read.

The first, Thoreau at Walden is a graphic novel with a completely self-explanatory title. It’s by John Porcellino.

It recounts, in graphic format, the time Henry David Thoreau spent at Walden (in Massachusetts), culminating in the writing of his book A week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. The story is told entirely in Thoreau’s own words, and for those unfamiliar with his writing, this is a great entry-level look at his ideas in an attractive graphic package!

Thoreau was the father of ideas such as civil disobedience (adhered to by Gandhi & Martin Luther King) and quite anti-government – he was briefly jailed for not paying taxes! He believed that people should live in harmony with nature and quit his teaching job when he was told to whip the students! He also supported John Brown in his campaign to end slavery. What a guy! This sounds all very intellectual doesn’t it? But – at the end of the day –Thoreau believed that though people come and go, empires rise and fall, human experience stays the same.

To end with a quote by the man himself – “Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something.” :)

The second graphic I m going to review is a bit lighter – but still kind of classic!

It’s Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer, by Van Jensen & Dusty Higgins. Man, I was cracking up by the first page as the writers recount how the carpenter finds the piece of talking wood and starts freaking out about it! Its covers some of the original Pinocchio story to bring you up to speed (in case like me, you can’t remember much of the original story by Collodi). And I think this is worth a quick read and has some hilarious moments – such as a growing nose which doubles as a never-ending stake supply and the foreboding rabbits of ill portent... go on borrow it!
